Submucosal Fibroids
Submucosal fibroids are those tumors that are located just below the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus. (The mucosa refers to the lining of the uterus. Sub means below.) While they are the most infrequent type of fibroid, they often cause prolonged menstrual periods and excessive heavy bleeding, a condition called menorrhagia.
Submucosal fibroids are more likely to cause the woman a lot of pain.
Typical symptoms of submucosal fibroids include:
- Uterine cramps and spasms – sometimes these can be very strong and almost as powerful as childbirth. This is because the uterus is trying to expel the fibroid.
- Heavy periods, as the large fibroid mass increases the endometrial surface, resulting in more menstrual blood
- Lengthy periods, as a result of more blood being shed

That’s interesting. When I first learned I had fibroids back in 1998, I didn’t even think much about them. I had always had 5-7 day periods, with 2 of those days as heavy .. so I just assumed they were normal. I didn’t have any cramps but I’ve noticed that over the years, especially in the last two years .. I have the cramps like spasms, they kinda run across the front of my stomach. My stomach protrudes, so many people say I look like I am newly pregnant. And some sexual positions are not comfortable – particularly rear entry (which used to me my favorite – now I tense up everytime)
I didn’t know that my gynelogical health was gonna be jacked up. Ive spent my late 20s and all of my 30s, with fibroids, endometriosis and other gyno issues .. that I just sometimes get depressed and a little disappointed.

I guess that’s the pains I get every now and then. I don’t remember exactly what kind of fibroids I was diagnosed with but I know I have at least 3 now maybe more by now. Haven’t been to doc to see about fibroids since son was born April 12, 2006. Thanks for the info. Ginger.

I don’t know what type fibroid I have but my doctor was telling the nurse that it was above the navel? Anyhow at the time I was 62yrso and the fibroid was approx 16cm and doctor suggested hysterectomy which I refused. I also had 2 large ovarian cysts which I allowed the doctor to remove my ovaries because he said as a precaution of poss cancer. My doctor said if the fibroid presented no problems for me then I could leave it intact which I did do. However, I very rarely if ever hear about women my age having fibroids and I am interested to know why not? I am still trying natural alternatives in an attempt to shrink it, so far, no luck

i have a pedunculated fribroid growing on the outside of my uterus at 13 cm. very large. i am a small girl so i appear to be 5 mos. pregnant. no problems with bleeding. some cramping and long heavy periods. i have had two ultra sounds.within the past two mos. and the fibroid has grown 2 cm. i don’t have insurance but my doctor who will be performing the surgery is very good and kind. he is going to try to do a liproscopic surgery and only to remove the top of my uterus as to not have fi
rbroids grow back . this is the only way i can get the surgery covered. i am trying to get county medical services to pay for the procedure. so far i have been approved. now my doctor has to convince them it is urgent before we can proceed. honestly how much bigger do i have to get before its considered urgent? i have been told by my first doctor that because it’s not cancerous that only heavy bleeding would justify urgency. i don’t really know what i will do if i cant get approved for the surgery. there are allot of people out there barking up my tree to buy their book or herbs. i am 47 years old so i don’t even think i would be having a child anymore. i just want to get this out of me with no chance of it ever coming back.
